Melbourne Winter Masterpieces

Introduced in 2004, Melbourne Winter Masterpieces is the name for an annual series of major exhibitions which balance curatorial excellence with popular appeal.

The exhibitions are sourced from prestigious galleries and institutions from around the world.

Napoleon: Revolution to Empire

National Gallery of Victoria

Napoleon: Revolution to Empire is a panoramic exhibition examining French art, culture and life from the 1770s to the 1820s. Its story runs from the first French voyages of discovery to Australia during the reign of Louis XV to the end of Napoleon's transforming leadership as first Emperor of France.

Game Masters

Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI)

Game Masters will showcase the work of leading local and international video game designers with over 125 playable games from the arcade era through to the latest console and mobile game technology.

The objectives of the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces are to:

  • Offer Victorians the opportunity to experience exclusive art exhibitions of the highest international standards.
  • Stage the exhibition in winter, in line with the Victorian Major Events Company and Tourism Victoria's winter tourism strategies. This attracts high numbers of international and interstate visitors and generates significant tourism and economic benefits to Victoria.
  • Achieve high levels of positive media coverage about Melbourne as well as generate destinational marketing opportunities for Melbourne.
