Victorian Indigenous Arts Awards (VIAA)

Introduced in 2005, the VIAA were developed to:

  • Support the development of the Indigenous arts industry within Victoria
  • Acknowledge and showcase Indigenous art produced in Victoria
  • Facilitate economic and commercial opportunities for Victorian Indigenous artists
  • Raise the profile of Indigenous cultural activities in Victoria, and
  • Develop new audiences and form partnerships within the arts sector.

Entries to the Victorian Indigenous Art Awards 2012 have now closed.

The Awards acknowledge the contribution and achievement of Indigenous artists in Victoria. The Awards seeks to profile the diversity of Indigenous art practice in Victoria and the uniqueness of south-east Australian Aboriginal art.

The total prize pool is valued at over $50,000 over five categories including the $25,000 Deadly Art Award.

2012 award Categories

The award categories for 2012 are:

  1. Deadly Art Award - $25,000
    including a Highly Commended award to the value of $5000
    Supported by: Arts Victoria

  2. Koorie Heritage Trust Acquisition Award - $5,000
    Sponsored by: Koorie Heritage Trust

  3. The CAL Victorian Indigenous Art Award for Three Dimensional Works - $5,000
    including a Highly Commended award to the value of $1,500.
    Sponsored by: Copyright Agency Limited, Cultural Fund

  4. The CAL Victorian Indigenous Art Award for Works on Paper - $5,000
    including a Highly Commended award to the value of $1,500.
    Sponsored by: Copyright Agency Limited, Cultural Fund

  5. The Arts Victoria People's Choice Award - $2,500
    Awarded to the artist who receives the highest number of votes from the public, via the Arts Victoria website.

  • Clinton Nain
  • Jason Smith

Judges represent community and industry interests and may include Elders or their representatives, Indigenous artists, art critics, staff of commercial, public and community owned galleries, art educators, curators and/or sponsors' representatives.

Judges are selected through invitation and approved by the Victorian Minister for the Arts.
