New show and new home for Circus Oz

Date: 20 June 2012

As Circus Oz   celebrates the world premiere of its latest show From the Ground Up, the groundwork is being prepared for the company's new headquarters in Collingwood.

Premier and Minister for the Arts Ted Baillieu will be at the Birrarung Marr Big Top tomorrow night for the opening and said that work had commenced to transform part of the old Collingwood technical school into a world-class, purpose-built facility for one of Victoria's most successful performing arts companies.

"Circus Oz is known and loved right around the world, and it proudly calls Melbourne home," Mr Baillieu said.

"Having well and truly outgrown its current premises in Port Melbourne, Circus Oz had been searching for a suitable permanent home for more than a decade before the Collingwood site was secured."

Mr Baillieu said the project, supported by the Victorian Government, was an Australian first.

"This project will rejuvenate a long derelict site, creating a vibrant and industrious hub of activity, and Australia's first dedicated facility for circus and physical theatre," Mr Baillieu said.

Circus Oz's new home will include:

  • a large dedicated rehearsal room that replicates show conditions, creating a safer environment for performers;
  • a specialised space for music rehearsals;
  • costume and props development workshops;
  • administrative offices; and
  • performance spaces.

"In addition to being the administrative and creative engine room of the company, the Collingwood project will bring great public benefits," Mr Baillieu said.

"It will enable Circus Oz to expand its community and outreach activities with more space for classes, community and kids' programs, public events and performances."

Designed by Melbourne architects Lovell Chen, the new facility is expected to be completed in late 2013.

Circus Oz's Melbourne season of From the Ground Up runs until 15 July before embarking on a national tour. The tour will include stops in Dandenong, Frankston and Warragul, supported by the Victorian Government through Arts Victoria's Touring Victoria program.
