Project Grants
Please note: applications for funding through the Arts Development program have now closed for 2011/12.
Project Grants funding provides support for any stage, or a combination of stages, from preliminary research and creative development through to production and the initial Victorian presentation, of new work by Victorian professional artists.
Eligibility
Applications are accepted from:
- Individual artists living and working in Victoria with a minimum of three years of professional practice and public presentation in their field.
- Recognised professional arts ensembles and organisations (including festivals) based in Victoria that have a demonstrated track record of presenting a high standard of work by professional artists.
Funding priorities
Particular priority will be given to artists practicing independently of the major arts organisations, and to projects that display a high level of creative excellence and originality.
Priority will also be given to projects that enable artists to make a considerable progression in their careers, and projects with the potential for a Victorian public presentation in a professional arts context.
A commitment to supporting artists practicing at different stages of their career, and those characterising the diversity of the Victorian arts sector will also be reflected in funding outcomes.
Closing dates
- 1 August 2011 for activities starting on or after 1 January 2012
- 27 February 2012 for activities starting on or after 1 July 2012
It takes approximately 12 weeks from the closing date until funding results are available.
Funds available
Funding is available from $4,000 to $30,000.

Written Proposal
This is the main part of your application. You must answer the questions below in such a way that they address the program assessment criteria.
What are you planning to do?
Provide a clear description of the proposed project, the artists involved and the stage of the project that you are seeking funds for.
Why do you want to do it?
Provide an artistic rationale that explains the ideas underlying the work, how the project extends the artist's overall practice, and places the work within a broader arts context.
How are you going to do it?
Briefly describe how you will deliver the proposed activity. Include information on the potential or proposed public outcomes for the work and any particular viability issues. Further details should be provided in your budget, timeline, letters of support and, if you are applying to present a new work, in your marketing/audience development strategies.
Supporting documents and artistic support material
Applications must include supporting documents and artistic support material.
Carefully select material that will best support your proposal and is relevant to the work you will develop/present. The artistic support material needs to be very clear, of high quality and tightly connected to the proposed project.
All applications are competitively assessed against the Arts Development program's aims, the Project Grants funding priorities, and the following assessment criteria:
- The artistic strength, vision, originality and potential practice development of the proposed project.
- The professional capabilities of the artist/organisation and the viability of the project.
- The potential of the work to reach an appropriate audience and contribute to the quality and diversity of the Victorian arts scene.
Assessments of applications are made primarily on the basis of the information supplied by you in your application and accompanying support material.
All applications are assessed by external artform advisors and program staff. Final recommendations are submitted to the Minister for the Arts for final approval.
