The Indigenous Visual Arts Residency Program provides an Indigenous visual artist or art-worker experience working within Victorian arts organisations and businesses through a vocational residency of up to that aims to connect Indigenous visual artists and arts workers with arts industry organisations and networks. It is intended that residencies will facilitate knowledge-sharing and foster career development opportunities for the participants.
Aims
The residency program aims to:
- Encourage the participation of Indigenous visual artists and arts-workers in the wider visual arts sector
- Address the lack of indigenous arts workers within the arts industry, and
- Provide Victorian Indigenous artists and arts workers with the opportunity to undertake challenging roles in their desired fields, while gaining the knowledge and experience to establish a rewarding career in the arts.
Applications are now open from Indigenous visual artists and arts workers in Victoria to undertake a workplace residency from late 2011. A number of exciting vocational opportunities are available from curatorial, arts administration and community program roles.
The program is open to practising emerging or established Indigenous visual artists, arts-workers, curators, community cultural development workers or Indigenous people working in creative industries based in Victoria who are interested in developing their professional skills and/or career in the arts or creative industries.
The residency placements run for 9 months, are part or full-time and include a salaried position for the resident from $44,011 per annum/pro rata.

Funding for this program has been provided by the State Government of Victoria through Arts Victoria in partnership with the Australian Government through the Office for the Arts and the National Arts and Craft Industry Strategy (NACIS).

To apply for a residency placement you must:
- Read the Indigenous Visual Arts Residencies information pack
- Download and complete the Residency Placement Application Form (Sample - PDF 105KB)
- Provide supporting documents and artistic support material
Applications will be assessed and short-listed. Short-listed applications are then provided to the selected host organisations for review. If the host organisation is happy to progress the application, a meeting will be arranged between the host organisation and the candidate to determine and finalise the residency arrangements.
The selection process is expected to be completed by October 2011. It is expected that the residencies will begin once host organisations and participants have been selected. Starting dates are vary between residencies, as some residencies are structured around existing project timelines.
The residency program is designed to offer vocational residencies within arts organisations. The participant becomes an employee of the organisation and fills a temporary position. The organisation becomes the employer. It is expected that the participant will adhere to the standard work and employment conditions of the host organisation.
The host organisation is expected to provide the resident with a challenging work program structured around core organisational business, special projects and their professional development needs. It is expected the organisation will provide a suitable level of supervision, support, and training, required of a new starter within the organisation.
