International

  • In 2011 there were over 1 million international cultural visitors to Victoria.
  • Cultural visitors represent 60% of all international visitors to the state.
  • International visitors stayed for 26.6 million nights.
  • The average length of stay for cultural visitors to Victoria was 25.4 nights.
  • 67% of Victorian international cultural visitors visited museums or art galleries.
  • 63% visited historical or heritage buildings.
  • 28% attended theatre, concerts or other performing arts activity.
  • 8% experienced Aboriginal art/craft and cultural displays.

Domestic

  • In 2011, around 2.7 million domestic overnight cultural visitors stayed for 9.7 million nights.
  • The average length of stay for domestic cultural visitors to Victoria was 3.6 nights.
  • Around 3.3 million day visitors attended cultural venues and events in Victoria.
  • The most popular attractions for Victoria's domestic cultural tourists were:
    • museums and art galleries (47%).
    • theatre, concerts and performing arts events (28%).
    • historic buildings and monuments (25%).
    • festivals, fairs or cultural events (16%).
