Arts Victoria is the Government body charged with advising on and implementing arts policy, developing the arts and cultural industries across the State and ensuring access for all Victorians.
The Arts Victoria Act 1972 requires us to:
- Develop and improve the knowledge, understanding, appreciation and practice of the arts
- Increase the availability and accessibility of the arts to the public
- Encourage and assist in the provision of facilities to enable the arts to be performed or displayed
- Continually survey and access the arts and report to Parliament on potential improvements
- Administer the Act and cooperate with other parts of Government and the arts industry.
Arts Victoria oversees the state owned cultural agencies – the Arts Centre, Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Geelong Performing Arts Centre, Museum Victoria, National Gallery of Victoria, State Library of Victoria – and the Public Records Office of Victoria. Under the Arts Victoria Act 1972, and in line with their individual Acts of Parliament, Arts Victoria encourages cooperation, supports their leadership functions, establishes governance standards and ensures that their strategic direction is in line with Government policy (see also the Arts Portfolio Governance Handbook).
Arts Victoria supports the arts and cultural industries to encourage excellence, develop good ideas, build audiences, encourage participation and improve facilities. This support is delivered through targeted programs devised by research and in response to community need.
Arts Victoria supports arts and cultural development in every part of our community, valuing diversity and Indigenous culture, regional growth and international opportunities.
By constantly developing the sector, Arts Victoria improves the knowledge, understanding, appreciation and practice of the arts and culture in Victoria.
