The Performing Arts Museum celebrates Australia's performing arts history and traditions. After the final curtain call and the sound of the applause fades, the Performing Arts Museum captures the spirit of the show. The divas, the chorus line, the rock stars, the set designers and the stage managers all have their place in Australia's premier specialist performing arts collection. The Museum acquired its first object in 1976 and the collection now numbers over 200,000 items. It owns numerous internationally significant collections including the business records and archives from theatrical agent JC Williamson, costumes and accessories from Dame Nellie Melba's stage career and writings, sketches and costumes from Barry Humphries and his alter-ego Dame Edna Everage. With the generous support of Arts Victoria, the Museum is undertaking a major project to computer catalogue and digitally image the collection. This massive project will allow the Museum to provide on-line access to the collection and make the most of exciting new technologies as they emerge. |
