Victoria - The Place To Be

Bunjilaka

Bunjilaka is the Aboriginal Centre at Melbourne Museum. It was developed to empower Aboriginal people to interpret their own cultural heritage for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Bunjilaka has changing exhibitions and a permanent exhibition exploring the experiences and survival of Aboriginal Victoria, Koori Voices.

The name Bunjilaka is derived from the word 'Bunjil' (Boonwurrung and Woiwurrung language). 'Bunjil' was a significant Creation Ancestor for most of Victoria's Aboriginal language groups; 'Aka' means land or place.

Bunjilaka holds Aboriginal cultural heritage items from a collection that is one of the most significant in the world. This material is available to the Koori community in Bunjilaka's 'Keeping Place' - a culturally appropriate space for Aboriginal people to access cultural heritage material.
