Victoria - The Place To Be

Dan Sultan

Dan Sultan is a contemporary musician and songwriter whose rock'n'roll style has had him dubbed 'Black Elvis'. Dan grew up in the Melbourne suburb of Williamstown, but his Aboriginal heritage is from Central Australia, from the Eastern Arrernte and Gurindji clans. He is a descendant of Vincent Lingiari, the Wave Hill stockman who led a walk-off in 1966 that became one of Australia's most momentous industrial disputes.

A lover and creator of music since he was three years old, Sultan emerged on the commercial music scene when he was handpicked by Paul Kelly to perform at Cannot Buy My Soul, a series of tribute performances for Indigenous songwriter Kev Carmody in 2008. John Butler also recognised his talent by part-financing the recording of Sultan's first album, Homemade Biscuits.

Dan's popularity continues to rise with performances at the Sydney Festival, Womad, Port Fairy Folk Festival, The East Coast Blues and Roots Festival in Byron Bay, The Blue Mountains Music Festival and the Dreaming Festival in Queensland.
