Ilbijerri
The first of its kind in Australia, Ilbijerri is a pioneering Melbourne-based Indigenous theatre company. Established in 1990, Ilbijerri creates and presents theatre by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. The word 'Ilbijerri' is from the Woiwurrung (Wurundjeri) language and means 'coming together for ceremony'.
Ilbijerri is a leading light in Australian theatre, creating innovative contemporary works that challenge and connect with both Indigenous and non-Indigenous audiences.
Ilbijerri create theatre that conveys the power of Indigenous voices and histories. Their creative processes support the empowerment of Indigenous artists and communities to tell the layered and diverse stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Their productions have toured nationally and internationally.
Their plays explore a range of complex and controversial issues from a uniquely Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspective including Songlines of a Mutti Mutti Man with Kutcha Edwards and The Dirty Mile a location-based exploration of the Koori history of the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy.
