Victoria - The Place To Be

Kutcha Edwards

Kutcha is a multi-talented Mutti Mutti man from the north-west of Victoria. During the course of his remarkable career, Kutcha's music and community work have seen him awarded NAIDOC Indigenous Person of the Year 2001-2002, and Male Artist of the Year at the 2001 Deadly Awards.

Kutcha's rich voice and songs that put stories to music means he is sought out performer, appearing at WOMAD Adelaide, the Sydney Opera House and the Perth International Festival.

For many years Kutcha was lead singer in Blackfire, a soft-rock/reggae, community fund raising band that toured internationally. He has since formed the Kutcha Edwards Band . The band has recorded two albums, Cooinda and Hope.

Kutcha also created a theatre performance 'Songlines of a Mutti Mutti Man', in collaboration with his brothers and sisters. Using the tradition of oral history, Kutcha and his family presented a unique and personal insight into the stories and songs of the Stolen Generations.

"Music is not what I do, it is who I am. My songs may be contemporary but they are over 40,000 years old. They come through me from my ancestors and my people and they tell the stories of what happens in a country where the first peoples are subject to invasion, genocide, segregation, assimilation and their children are stolen. My music continues the tracks of my Mutti Mutti songline." Kutcha Edwards
