Presentation

This category supports the presentation of new work in Victoria across all art forms.

This includes:

  • The initial presentation or publication of a new work or
  • The significant reinterpretation of an existing work

Priority will be given to locally created work.

The presentation must take place within 12 months of lodging your application.

Eligibility

Applications are accepted from:

Closing Dates

  • 3 August 2009 for activities commencing from 1 January 2010
  • 1 March 2010 for activities commencing from 1 July 2010

It takes approximately 15 weeks from the closing date until funding results are available.

Funds Available

Funding is available from $5,000 to $30,000, in increments of $500

If you are applying for $20,000 or more, you must discuss your proposal with program staff in advance.

In the 2007-2008 financial year 98 applications were received and 31(32%) were funded. The total funds awarded was $590,000.

To apply for funding you must:

  • Complete the application form which includes a budget. Download the forms and full guidelines as a:
  • Submit a written proposal (see below)
  • Provide artistic support material relevant to your project (eg DVD, images, manuscript excerpt, CD)
  • Provide supporting documents (eg written confirmation from a presenter, venue, publisher, distributor, site or gallery stating the project name, associated costs and presentation dates).

Written proposal

This is the main part of your application and must clearly address the following criteria:

Artistic Merit

  • The creative content of the work you will be presenting, including the concept and rationale
  • The aims and objectives of your project
  • The artistic working process or creative methodology
  • The artists involved, their experience and their responsibilities. Where possible, provide written confirmation of these artists' availability in your support material.
  • Practice development opportunities for the artists involved.

Project Viability

  • How you are going to manage your project, including a management plan demonstrating effective use of resources
  • When the project will take place. Provide clear information on the presentation date(s). For projects over several months, use a timeline.
  • Additional notes on your project budget, where necessary.

Victorian Public Outcome

  • Information on the choice/artistic fit of venue/site/gallery, or distribution for publications
  • Describe how you will attract an audience for the project. Briefly outline the marketing strategies
  • Explain the potential of the work to contribute to the quality and diversity of arts programming in Victoria
  • Outline future opportunities for the work after the initial presentation, if possible include letters of support (eg: interest from a regional/international presenter).

Applications are competitively assessed according to each of the following criteria:

  • Artistic Merit - a strong artistic concept for the work and a high level of creative excellence and originality.
  • Project Viability - the ability of the applicant to deliver the proposed activity and achieve the described outcomes.
  • Victorian Public Outcome - the potential of the work to reach an appropriate audience and contribute to the quality and diversity of arts programming in Victoria.

 Applications go through a standard assessment process. This includes review and evaluation by a peer assessment panel.

  • Robyne Latham – Visual artist
  • Andrián Pertout – Independent composer and performer

    As a recipient of Arts Victoria funding, you are required to:

    • Notify Arts Victoria of any changes to your proposed project
    • Publicly acknowledge the support of the Victorian Government using specific logos and text
    • Acquit your grant by completing a written report on the outcomes of your funded project.

    The Arts Victoria logo device must be included on all promotional materials produced by the grant recipient in relation to the funded activity.

    These may include (but are not restricted to):

    • Posters, fliers and brochures
    • Advertisements
    • Invitations
    • Information and education kits
    • Signage
    • Programs and catalogues
    • Websites.

    The size and position of the logo should be commensurate with the level of funding provided by the Victorian Government through Arts Victoria in relation to other supporters.

    Logo for Literature Organisations or Projects

    In 2008, Melbourne was officially designated a UNESCO City of Literature. All literature projects or organisations receiving Arts Victoria funding should be branded under the initiative by using the UNESCO Melbourne City of Literature logo devlce on all marketing and promotional materials. This should be used in addition to the standard logo and acknowledgements outlined above.

    Text Acknowledgement

    The following text/verbal acknowledgement of Victorian Government support should be used in any speeches, media releases, interviews and other circumstances where a logo may not be possible:

    Acquittal Reports

    When your funded activity is completed, you must provide Arts Victoria with an acquittal report within 30 days.

    Failure to satisfactorily acquit funding will make you ineligible for future Arts Victoria funding and may result in action to recover the grant.

    Melbourne Workers Theatre (on behalf of Peta Hanrahan) Received $5,000 in 2006-2007 for:

    Presentation of Shrimp, a reinterpretation of the true story of a disabled Vietnamese war orphan who was raised on a sheep farm, written by Dominic Golding with director Peta Hanrahan, at La Mama Theatre, followed by a tour of regional Victoria.
