Programming

This category supports the presentation of a series or program of professional arts activities that takes place within a 12-month timeframe.

Eligibility

The program accepts applications from:

  • Individual professional artists who have a minimum of three years of professional practice
  • Recognised professional arts ensembles and organisations (including festivals)
  • Other organisations based in Victoria that have a demonstrated track record of presenting a high standard of work by professional artists
  • National organisations offering significant benefits to Victorians.

Closing Dates

  • 3 August 2009 for activities commencing from 1 January 2010
  • 1 March 2010 for activities commencing from 1 July 2010

It takes approximately 15 weeks from the closing date until funding results are available.

Funds Available

Funding is available from $5,000 to $30,000, in $500 increments.

Applicants requesting $20,000 or more and national arts organisations must discuss their proposal with program staff in advance.

Applicants may apply to this category more than once a year, however a maximum of $30,000 will be awarded to any applicant over a twelve-month period.

In the 2007-2008 financial year 90 applications were received and 35 (39%) were funded. The total funds awarded was $414,830 and individual grants ranged from $5,000 to $20,000.

To apply for funding you must:

  • Complete the application form which includes a budget. Download the forms and full guidelines as a:
  • Submit a written proposal (see below)
  • Provide artistic support material relevant to your project (eg DVD, images, manuscript excerpt, CD)
  • Provide supporting documents (eg written confirmation from a presenter, venue, publisher, distributor, site or gallery stating the project/program name, associated costs and presentation dates).

Written Proposal

This is the main part of your application and must clearly address the following criteria:

Artistic Program

  • Provide a statement regarding the artistic rationale including the curatorial vision and selection process for developing the program
  • Explain how your program contributes to art form or arts practice development
  • Provide a brief description of each program activity to be presented, including the information on the creative content
  • Provide brief biographies of key artists/creative personnel involved. (Applicants must confirm the participation of all artists before including their names in the proposal)

Program Management

  • Provide background information and a brief history of the applicant organisation
  • Outline who will manage the program and their relevant experience
  • Outline program delivery plans and timelines
  • Detail where the program will take place, including venues/sites/galleries or distribution. Written confirmation from presenters/venues/distributors is mandatory as part of the support material.

Outcomes, Marketing and Engagement

  • Describe the target audience/market and the relevance of the program to that audience
  • Describe how you will attract an audience for the program including the distribution and/or marketing strategies
  • Detail the evaluation methods you will use to measure the effectiveness of your distribution/marketing strategies
  • Explain how the program will contribute to the quality and diversity of arts and cultural programming in Victoria.

Applications are competitively assessed according to each of the following criteria:

  • Artistic Program - a strong and clearly articulated artistic rationale, the standard of contemporary artistic work and the suitability of the proposed artists.
  • Program Management – a viable project management plan, timeline and budget appropriate to the scale and complexity of the program.
  • Outcomes, Marketing and Engagement – the potential benefit of the program to contribute to the quality and diversity of the arts in Victoria; and the potential of the program to engage new and/or diverse audiences, appropriate to the level of funding sought.

Applications go through a standard assessment process. This includes review and evaluation by a peer assessment panel.

  • Douglas Horton – Independent opera and musical theatre director
  • Liz Jones – Artistic Director, La Mama
  • Natalie King – Independent curator, writer and broadcaster

    As a recipient of Arts Victoria funding, you are required to:

    • Notify Arts Victoria of any changes to your proposed project
    • Publicly acknowledge the support of the Victorian Government using specific logos and text
    • Acquit your grant by completing a written report on the outcomes of your funded project.

    The Arts Victoria logo device must be included on all promotional materials produced by the grant recipient in relation to the funded activity.

    These may include (but are not restricted to):

    • Posters, fliers and brochures
    • Advertisements
    • Invitations
    • Information and education kits
    • Signage
    • Programs and catalogues
    • Websites.

    The size and position of the logo should be commensurate with the level of funding provided by the Victorian Government through Arts Victoria in relation to other supporters.

    Logo for Literature Organisations or Projects

    In 2008, Melbourne was officially designated a UNESCO City of Literature. All literature projects or organisations receiving Arts Victoria funding should be branded under the initiative by using the UNESCO Melbourne City of Literature logo devlce on all marketing and promotional materials. This should be used in addition to the standard logo and acknowledgements outlined above.

    Text Acknowledgement

    The following text/verbal acknowledgement of Victorian Government support should be used in any speeches, media releases, interviews and other circumstances where a logo may not be possible:

    Acquittal Reports

    When your funded activity is completed, you must provide Arts Victoria with an acquittal report within 30 days.

    Failure to satisfactorily acquit funding will make you ineligible for future Arts Victoria funding and may result in action to recover the grant.
