The National Ballet of China
the Arts Centre presents
Arts Centre Raise the Red Lantern
Love, loyalty, jealousy and intrigue…
With an impressive company of over 50 dancers, rich period sets and lavish costumes –
Raise the Red Lantern by the National Ballet of China is the one production bound to ignite your senses and thrill you to your visual core this winter.
Raise the Red Lantern stunned the cinematic world in 1991 with its astonishing depiction of a Chinese feudal world in which a young woman is forced against her will to become the concubine of an old lord.
The director of the acclaimed film, Zhang Yimou (also
House of Flying Daggers), together with choreographer Wang Xinpeng, subsequently translated this tragic story into an astounding ballet, created especially for The National Ballet of China.
Adding to this incredible performance is an exciting musical score supported by the ethereal performance of live Peking Opera singers. This is a uniquely Chinese style of ballet theatre, remarkable for its breathtaking blend of Chinese and Western theatrical forms with traditional ballet.
The National Ballet of China has toured worldwide, winning international acclaim for its outstanding artistic achievements.
‘If this is the new face of Chinese ballet, let’s have more’.
